Four years after his initial documentary, Louis Theroux returns to the infamous Westboro Baptist Church amongst stories of broken families and increasing erratic behaviour from the church.
From the outset, the behaviour of the church hasn’t changed. They are still as deluded and their perturbed rhetoric is the same. They now refer to their home as Xion as well as being the “elite”. The fact that they have had close friends and family members leave the church, is “a blessing” as they no longer have “their burden” weighing them down.
Highlights include the tale of a picture one of the nutjob girls has taken of a Muslim boy. Her sister takes great delight in informing us that this picture had been taken just down the road from other church members burning the Koran at a family members’ funeral. Wonderful. She also is too scared to talk to Louis alone and needs to be flanked with three other church members at all times.
From their interactions with Louis and the rest of the world, we can see just how whacked the minds of these people really are. Rather than engage with Louis’ debate they reject anything he says and any questions he asks as trickery to to trap them into saying something they don’t mean. Such as common sense.
Their reason for inviting Louis back is that he is spreading the word for them and that we all need to be filled in as to how Obama is the anti-christ. And the basis on which this glorious piece of fact is ground? They were all stood around talking and came to this conclusion. Genius. Perhaps one of them might like to venture into journalism as the Daily Mail could probably use some more made up facts to fill their pages.
And my favourite thing about the whole clan is the completely blank faces that spew out this garbage. When considering a view against their own is like watching a child considering the fact that they can’t eat their own head. After moments of ‘contemplation’ instead of a reasoned counter-argument all that we are treated to is even more rhetoric that makes no sense. With an eerie smile or laugh as if deep down, they actually know this is completely ridiculous but since they have nothing better to do with their time, well hey, why the hell not?
Thankfully the numbers of this whackjob group are dwindling, which in a way I’m not sure is a blessing or a curse. Of course we could all do without some other nutter parading around telling us we’re all going to burn in hell for all eternity, but the levels of insanity these people operate at is purely mind boggling. And whilst they are around, the actual stupidity of these people is somewhat entertaining.
